Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) and RPGs inspired by Japanese themes often incorporate certain recurring gameplay elements, such as fishing. Sea of Stars follows suit in this regard. Fortunately, players won’t have to wait too long before they can indulge in a spot of fishing themselves. This opportunity arises once the main characters, Zale and Valere, emerge victorious against the colossal slug and complete their trials.
After departing from the Forbidden Cavern, the duo can make a left turn towards the fishing pond, allowing them to start fishing right away without the hassle of acquiring or locating a fishing rod. Nevertheless, Sea of Stars does leave it to the players to figure out the finer mechanics of the fishing process. Here’s a rundown of what avid gamers should be aware of.
Fishing Techniques in Sea of Stars
Zale and Valere’s initial fishing spot is none other than Sunglow Lake. However, prior to gaining entry, there’s a series of tasks they need to accomplish. This includes conquering the challenges of the Forbidden Cavern, prevailing over the inaugural boss in the Sea of Stars, and proceeding northward to Sunglow Lake by making a left turn upon exiting the cavern. Upon reaching Sunglow Lake, players should take a moment to examine the displayed fish shapes on the board. With this done, it’s time to prepare for some casting action. Notably, the most formidable fish tend to inhabit the pond’s farthest reaches.
Position yourself on the dock and initiate the casting action by pressing the Cast button to release the line. Engage with the Fishing Minigame to direct the fishing rod in any desired direction, and release the weight by tapping the Kick button. While maneuvering the rod, the left and right buttons on the L Stick will prove crucial. Exercise caution to avoid yanking the fish in the opposite direction too hastily. Instead, opt for a gradual movement of the directional stick to ensure a smoother process.
When a fish grabs hold of the bait, the aim is to align the line as accurately as you can and softly start reeling it in. Should the line start flashing red, it’s advisable to refrain from reeling and instead go with the flow of the fish’s movement. Otherwise, there’s a risk of the line breaking, resulting in the unfortunate loss of the fish. When the fish leaps out of the water, giving the kick button a quick press will momentarily stun it, allowing you to apply the Reel action. Take care not to rush the process while reeling, particularly if you’re employing a controller; when vibrations occur, it’s wise to ease up on the pull.
As the fish draws nearer to your main character, hold down the Reel button, ultimately leading to a successful catch.
Subsequently, players are presented with the option to either fillet the fish or opt for its release. If your party’s food supplies are running thin, filleting is the wiser course of action. However, if the decision is to let the fish go back into the pond, rest assured that this choice won’t impact the overall storyline.
