Turok: Origins – Saber’s Sci-Fi Gamescom 2025 Debut

Saber Interactive revealed Turok: Origins at The Game Awards 2025, a reimagining of the beloved retro sci-fi action series. The franchise traces its roots to a comics debut in 1954, featuring a skilled Indigenous warrior navigating prehistoric and extraterrestrial threats. While early comic iterations spanned multiple publishers, the character surged in popularity through Acclaim’s landmark 1997 video game, which spawned sequels generating over $250 million by 2002.

Despite commercial success, the series faced turbulence post-Turok: Evolution. Propaganda Games’ 2008 release—a Disney-owned studio—sold over a million units but faced mixed reviews. Plans for a follow-up were scrapped when the studio shuttered in 2011. Now, Saber Interactive, known for revitalizing Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and the anticipated KOTOR remake, aims to resurrect the IP.

At Gamescom 2025, Saber Madrid’s 250-person team confirmed a five-year development cycle for Origins, featuring a 15-hour campaign loosely tied to the 1997 narrative. Players confront hybrid threats: dinosaurs augmented by alien tech from the Xenian Empire, which threatens humanity across multiple planets. Gameplay reveals terrains like alien jungles, desolate canyons, and ancient ruins.

A hands-on demo highlighted three-player co-op, with characters wielding distinct weapons, abilities, and upgradable “Echoes” powers. Combat blends ranged and melee takedowns, though level design prioritizes linear progression over exploration. A grappling hook mechanic appears scripted, limited to specific environmental triggers. Notably, a legacy toggle allows instant switching between first- and third-person perspectives—a nod to series purists.

The demo’s climax pitted players against a teleporting, lightning-wielding Triceratops hybrid, showcasing Saber’s blend of classic creature design and sci-fi twists. While no release date was confirmed, polished visuals and 60 FPS performance (excluding Xbox Series S) suggest near-final optimization. Whether this revival captures modern audiences will hinge on balancing nostalgic appeal with fresh mechanics.
