Sony’s partnership with the EVO fighting game championship has intensified its dedication to titles like Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8. The corporation heavily promotes every major release in this category, solidifying its position as the dominant force in competitive combat gaming.
Except for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale on older consoles, Sony lacked a defining fighter. PS XDev’s Reed Baird revealed this absence motivated their collaboration with Arc System Works for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls.
“The inspiration for working on this project really came from a place of pure fandom and wanting to say, ‘Why aren’t we in this space?’” he explained.
Sony pitched a team-based combat concept to Marvel Games, building on their Spider-Man success. Arc System Works’ involvement, famed for Dragon Ball FighterZ, sealed the deal when Marvel approved the studio choice.
This collaboration’s strategic foundation proves compelling. While Sony and Marvel’s bond is undeniable, Arc System Works’ participation transforms it into a trifecta of industry titans.
Revelations about Sony’s prolonged interest in developing a fighter intrigue fans. Though many anticipated Arc System Works crafting a PlayStation character roster, the Marvel universe offers wider audience appeal.
