Roblox Adds IARC Age Ratings, Chat Verification by 2025

Roblox collaborates with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to replace its existing content classification framework for user-created games—referred to as “experiences”—with standardized ratings comparable to those seen on traditional titles, including ESRB, PEGI, GRAC, and USK. Additionally, the platform mandates age authentication for accessing in-game communication features by December 2025.

Users in North America will encounter ESRB classifications, while those in European regions and the UK will observe PEGI labels, USK in Germany, and GRAC certifications in South Korea.

This overhaul follows long-standing critiques regarding inadequate safeguards against predatory behavior targeting minors, a problem extensively documented by investigative reports. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murril recently initiated legal action against Roblox, alleging insufficient child protection measures. The company dismissed the allegations as “inaccurate” in its official statement.

As a platform welcoming millions of families, integrating universally recognized ratings ensures guardians can make informed decisions,” remarked Patricia Vance, ESRB president and IARC chair, in an interview with GamesIndustry.Biz. “This standardized approach streamlines rating assignments for developers while enhancing transparency for parents.

For age confirmation, Roblox will utilize identity verification, guardian approval, and AI-based age-assessment tools to enhance accuracy, moving beyond its previous method of “self-reported birthdates during account creation,” explained Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman.

Kaufman noted that the platform has deployed “over 100 protective measures” in 2025 alone, asserting these updates strengthen existing security infrastructure. Earlier reports from Bloomberg revealed more than 13,000 documented cases of underage exploitation in 2023, with internal sources suggesting ongoing challenges in moderating predatory activities.
