The PSP Go was ahead of its time, no doubt about it.
A charming device, the sleek sliding mechanism was highly portable and featured Quick Resume long before Microsoft made it popular on the Xbox Series X|S.
However, the world wasn’t prepared for a digital-only handheld in 2009, as many of the PSP’s top games weren’t available on the PS Store when it launched.
But we still hold a special place for it. While handhelds are growing larger, the PSP Go remains pocket-friendly with a bright display and a satisfying sliding mechanism.
You might remember the design was also used by the similarly short-lived Sony Xperia Play, a phone that had traditional gamepad controls for playing emulated PS1 games on the go.
Retro handheld maker Anbernic seems to be honoring both devices with its upcoming RG Slide. Currently, there’s only a teaser trailer, but it’s clearly inspired by the PSP Go, featuring a smooth sliding mechanism that reveals the controls.
If it can replicate the size and weight of Sony’s system with good processing power, it could be a fantastic portable emulator for your favorite PlayStation games.
We anticipate more details will be coming soon.
