Remedy Acknowledges Underwhelming FBC: Firebreak Sales, Reveals Control Tops 5 Million Units Sold

Finnish studio Remedy Games disclosed disappointing results for FBC: Firebreak in its recent fiscal update. While the title reached one million players, the figure primarily reflected Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus downloads, with Steam sales failing to meet projections. CEO Tero Virtala acknowledged the rocky start:

Early challenges in the game’s introductory stages led to significant attrition rates among early users and a flood of critical feedback. Subsequent patches improved player retention, gradually shifting reviews toward more favorable impressions.

Revenue-wise, direct consumer purchases at launch proved insufficient. A substantial share of income stems from subscription service deals, with related earnings still to be realized over the contractual term.

Despite setbacks, Virtala emphasized FBC: Firebreak’s potential as a live-service title, citing planned enhancements in an autumn update. Meanwhile, Control surpassed five million lifetime sales, bolstering Remedy’s finances following the studio’s reacquisition of publishing rights earlier this year. Alan Wake 2 also maintains consistent revenue streams through ongoing royalties.

Looking ahead, Control 2 remains in development with an emphasis on refining core gameplay loops and level design to maximize market appeal. The studio’s Max Payne remake, developed alongside Rockstar Games, continues steady production through their ongoing partnership. Both projects aim to advance Remedy’s position in narrative-driven action genres.
