PlayStation 5 Reaches 80.3 Million Units Shipped

Sony’s Q1 2025 earnings report confirmed PlayStation 5 shipments surpassed 80.3 million units globally, achieving the 80 million milestone. This followed a quarterly distribution of 2.5 million consoles, marginally higher than the 2.4 million units shipped during the same period last year.

The gaming division exhibited robust performance across several metrics. Sales of full games saw a substantial rise to 65.9 million units this quarter, up 23% from 53.6 million in Q1 2024. First-party titles also experienced growth, climbing from 6 million to 6.9 million copies sold (+15%). Digital downloads dominated with an 83% share of software sales—a record high, compared to 80% in the prior year’s quarter.

PlayStation Network’s monthly active users (MAUs) expanded to 123 million, marking a 6% uptick from 116 million in Q1 2024. While this figure trails earlier quarterly peaks (129 million in Q3 2024 and 124 million in Q4 2023), seasonal trends typically drive fluctuations in engagement.

The Game and Network Services division reported an 8% year-over-year revenue increase. Despite this progress, the PS5 continues to trail slightly behind the PlayStation 4’s historical pace: by June 2018, PS4 shipments had reached 82.3 million units. Challenges such as pandemic-related disruptions, component shortages spanning 2020–2023, and inflationary pressures on pricing have impacted the PS5’s trajectory. Nonetheless, Sony likely remains satisfied with the console’s performance, given these unprecedented market conditions.
