Players Seek Deeper RPGs, Says Outer Worlds 2 Director

With The Outer Worlds 2 arriving in under three weeks, Obsidian continues an impressive streak following Avowed and the early-access release of Grounded 2. As the launch nears, Lead Developer Brandon Adler shared insights on enhancements in this sequel, emphasizing expanded environments, dynamic player-driven outcomes, and refined role-playing systems. Adler noted that fans increasingly seek complexity in RPG systems, a priority for the studio.

Gamers crave more intricate role-playing experiences. While some titles simplify mechanics, we’ve observed a demand for depth—players want granular stat customization, diverse character builds, and meaningful decision-making. In The Outer Worlds 2, we’re doubling down on these elements, reintroducing layers often pared back in modern RPGs. This project marks my debut as lead director on a major title, drawing inspiration from Obsidian’s legacy of choice-driven narratives. We’re blending classic design philosophies with modern polish to prioritize player autonomy and impactful consequences.

Previously, I oversaw expansions like Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire, but steering this sequel has been transformative. Our focus is revitalizing the depth that defined our earlier work—crafting reactive worlds where choices resonate. Ensuring every quest and interaction reflects player agency has been central to development.

This direction aligns with trends highlighted by titles like Baldur’s Gate 3, proving audiences embrace intricate systems. Initial previews focused on the prologue, so deeper mechanics may emerge in later segments.

The Outer Worlds 2 launches October 29 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
