Oblivion Remastered Registered Over 9 Million Players, Says Bethesda

Bethesda has revealed that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered surpassed 9 million global players post-launch on April 22. Alongside the announcement, the studio shared an image of the legendary “adoring fan”—a recurring Wood Elf NPC known for following the Arena Champion—with his signature hairstyle reworked into the number nine.

To those who claimed Kvatch’s glory, unleashed arcane mastery, conquered the Arena, dismantled the Blackwood faction, prowled as the Gray Fox, and answered the Night’s call—

We’re grateful for your journey through our realms. ❤️

The remastered edition quickly captured fan enthusiasm, hitting 4 million players within 48 hours of release. Its inclusion on Xbox Game Pass for Series S|X and PC undoubtedly played a key role in accelerating adoption.

Analytics group Newzoo praised the title’s exceptional financial achievements, labeling it a blueprint for remaster projects. Circana reported it as April 2025’s top-selling title in the U.S. across all platforms.

Despite this triumph, Virtuos—the studio behind the remake—recently reduced its workforce by roughly 280 staffers globally. It remains uncertain how this will affect ongoing updates. Players have noted persistent technical hiccups, particularly erratic frame rates during open-world exploration, which Patch 1.2 partially addressed. Further optimizations could elevate an experience central to the Elder Scrolls’ identity: unrestricted, immersive adventuring.
