Nintendo Switch 2’s Display, HDR Support Fall Short in Analysis

Recent evaluations highlight that the Nintendo Switch 2’s screen quality falls short of modern standards, particularly in HDR performance. A technical review from GamingTech (embedded below) reveals the handheld’s display peaks between 400 to 450 nits of brightness. Testing popular titles showed inconsistent results: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild reached 420 nits, while Cyberpunk 2077 maxed at 450 nits—indicating the panel’s upper limit. Compounding these issues, the LCD technology’s inherent backlight flaws result in elevated black levels (~0.5 nits), undermining contrast ratios essential for true HDR fidelity.

When docked, the system shows marginal HDR improvements. Default calibration settings provide adequate optimization for titles like Cyberpunk 2077, matching the visual output of competing platforms. However, games with stylized art direction, such as Breath of the Wild, exhibit a muted color palette due to insufficient dynamic range and limited contrast adjustments.

Nintendo’s latest console is now available globally, accompanied by a launch day patch enabling online services, digital store access, and expanded system features. Users are advised to install this update immediately for full functionality.
