Nintendo hikes US Switch price, but Switch 2 cost remains steady for now [Update]

Update 01/08/2025: While Nintendo planned to reveal updated pricing for its Switch lineup and select Switch 2 accessories on August 3, 2025, U.S. retailer Target has accidentally revealed the changes ahead of schedule.

As reported by VGC, listings on Target’s platform show revised costs for all Switch models:

  • Standard Switch: $339.99 (previously $299.99)
  • Switch Lite: $229 (up from $199)
  • Switch OLED: $399 (a $50 increase)

Initial Report:

Mirroring adjustments made in Canada last month, Nintendo confirmed U.S. pricing revisions for existing Switch hardware. The company’s statement notes changes will affect base Switch units, OLED/Lite variants, and select accessories. Pricing for the Switch 2 console remains unchanged, along with its peripherals and online services.

While Nintendo didn’t disclose exact figures, the Canadian rollout suggests similar hikes. Previous Canadian MSRPs saw increases ranging from $20-$40 CAD across models after July’s announcement. Current base Canadian pricing stands at:

  • Standard Switch: $419 CAD
  • Switch Lite: $279 CAD
  • Switch OLED: $489 CAD

U.S. shoppers currently pay:

  • Standard Switch: $299
  • Switch Lite: $199
  • Switch OLED: $349

The company cited “evolving market factors” as justification, emphasizing that Switch 2 gear remains unaffected for now. However, select Switch 2 add-ons like the Alarmo peripheral and specific Amiibo figures will see adjustments.

This pricing shift for aging hardware raises questions about the Switch 2’s longevity at current rates. With the new console outselling expectations and tariffs potentially influencing costs, analysts speculate subsequent increases might target Nintendo’s latest system. Officially, Nintendo acknowledged future Switch 2 price revisions could occur “if required by market conditions.”
