Subscribers to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate enjoy access to cloud-based game streaming via Xbox Cloud Gaming, allowing them to play titles remotely without local installations. While this perk is currently exclusive to the premium Game Pass tier, Microsoft’s VP of next-gen development, Jason Ronald, recently suggested potential plans for a “cost-effective” standalone option focused solely on streaming.
During an Xbox podcast episode, Ronald and Jason Beaumont, VP of experiences, explored the future of Microsoft’s cloud initiatives. Beaumont emphasized their vision: “We want gaming to reach broader audiences globally. Expanding device compatibility and regional availability are key steps.”
Ronald added, “Many players rely on Game Pass Ultimate for cloud access, whether as their main platform or for mobile play. This opens doors to affordability and accessibility—whether through new markets or streamlined entry points.”
Though Ronald didn’t confirm specifics, a dedicated cloud-only subscription tier—unbundled from downloads and console perks—appears a logical move. Meanwhile, Microsoft continues expanding its ecosystem, with plans to showcase the ROG Xbox Ally handheld at Gamescom 2025.
