Louisiana’s Attorney General, Liz Murrill, has filed legal action against Roblox Corporation, operator of the popular online gaming platform Roblox. The suit claims insufficient safeguards on the platform have allowed predatory behavior targeting minors, a significant concern given its young user base.
Excerpts from the court filing outline severe accusations:
According to the complaint, Roblox Corporation has allegedly permitted systemic child exploitation by neglecting to implement adequate protective measures. The platform’s design reportedly fosters environments where minors face preventable risks, with insufficient warnings to families about potential dangers. These alleged failures have led to lasting harm for children in Louisiana and beyond.
Though centered on Louisiana, the issue reflects broader global challenges. Since its 2006 debut, Roblox has expanded into a dominant UGC platform, reaching 85.3 million daily active users worldwide by February 2025. Company statistics suggest monthly engagement from 50% of U.S. children under 16.
Multiple nations—including China, Turkey, and Qatar—have banned Roblox over child safety concerns. Following Turkey’s 2024 prohibition, the platform introduced age-based restrictions: players under 13 now require guardian approval for chat access, while those under 9 need parental consent for experiences labeled “Moderate” in content maturity.
The lawsuit asserts current precautions remain inadequate. This follows Roblox’s recent policy shift banning community-enforced moderation efforts, which the company claims exacerbated platform risks despite intentions to combat misconduct.
