Limited Run Games Finds Cause of Switch 2’s Carbon Engine Issues

Limited Run Games appears to be facing initial challenges adapting its Carbon Engine technology for Switch 2 compatibility. Multiple user reports indicate technical difficulties with titles like Tomba! Special Edition and Clock Tower: Rewind running on Nintendo’s upgraded hardware. Performance discrepancies include audio glitches and broader instability, with both games appearing on Nintendo’s official compatibility advisory list.

Developer Josh Fairhurst explained via correspondence with gaming publication Time Extension that compatibility problems stem from legacy code used for Switch video playback. Limited Run received development hardware mid-May and identified the problematic code shortly thereafter:

“The backwards compatibility issue derives from a line of code that is used for video playback on the original Switch. We have reported the line of code to Nintendo and are hoping to see it addressed as an update to the Switch 2’s backwards compatibility in the future, as I believe this line of code is also causing compatibility issues with games from other publishers.

We were accepted as Switch 2 publishers and developers in mid-May and received our development hardware two weeks ago. We started digging into the issue the minute we got our kits and found the line of code causing the problem after a few days of investigation.”

The company’s social media updates express optimism about Nintendo implementing system-level corrections. While early adoption hurdles aren’t unexpected, the pinpointed code issue offers hope for resolving Carbon Engine-based game support. This middleware tool enables cross-platform emulation by integrating modern OS features like achievement systems with legacy game binaries.
