KIZUNA ENCOUNTER Interview: 4-Player Mode, Balance & NEOGEO’s Future

First debuted in 1996, KIZUNA ENCOUNTER: SUPER TAG BATTLE remains one of SNK’s more obscure titles. While it never achieved the widespread acclaim of series like Fatal Fury or Samurai Shodown, its roster, cooperative combat system, and striking art style cultivated a dedicated group of fans. Nearly three decades later, the title re-emerges on PC as part of the NEOGEO Premium Selection, introducing fresh additions like revamped multiplayer options.

After testing the updated version, which highlights the game’s strategic positional tagging mechanics, I connected with producer Laurent Vernézy to discuss the new 4-vs-4 functionality, balancing retro authenticity with modern tweaks, and the future of SNK’s classic library.

NOTE: The following interview exchange was conducted through a written format.

Q: KIZUNA ENCOUNTER occupies a niche space compared to SNK’s flagship series. Why select it for the NEOGEO Premium Treatment?

A: Its vibrant cast, dynamic tag-team system, rapid action, and memorable music made it a perfect candidate to follow REAL BOUT FATAL FURY 2: THE NEWCOMERS in our Premium Selection initiative.

Q: How might contemporary players unfamiliar with the original respond to this revival?

A: New audiences should appreciate its distinct visual flair, tight mechanics, and legacy as an innovative fighter.

Q: Did insights from REAL BOUT FATAL FURY 2’s release shape KIZUNA’s development?

A: Given REAL BOUT’s recent launch, it’s too early to draw conclusions about its impact.

Q: Does this version modify the original’s gameplay balancing?

A: No alterations were made. This release preserves the 1996 arcade experience faithfully.

Q: Integrating rollback netcode is crucial today. Was this process difficult for a legacy title?

A: While adding rollback to older fighters is routine for us, supporting four-player online matches posed unique technical hurdles—now successfully overcome.

Q: The expanded 4-player modes add fresh competitive layers. What sparked this idea, and how complex was execution?

A: We aimed to maximize versus tag possibilities. While challenging, we’re proud to offer these options for modern audiences.

Q: Is the hitbox display feature integrated into this release?

A: Yes—the Practice Mode includes a toggleable hitbox visualization tool.

Q: Boss characters are now playable without cheats. Were adjustments made to balance their power?

A: No. Jyazu and King Leo retain their overpowered traits but cannot tag partners, creating high-risk tradeoffs.

Q: Did community responses to REAL BOUT influence KIZUNA’s updates?

A: Given REAL BOUT’s recent debut, player feedback hasn’t yet informed development.

Q: Could KIZUNA carve a space in today’s competitive tournament circuits?

A: Definitely. Its unique mechanics could resonate with both newcomers and seasoned competitors.

Q: Are console ports or crossplay planned for Premium Selection titles?

A: Console releases remain under consideration based on demand. Crossplay discussions are pending.

Q: Will future Premium Selection entries focus solely on fighting games?

A: No—we anticipate a broader range of SNK classics, including genres beyond fighters.

Thank you!

This revival solidifies the NEOGEO Premium Selection’s commitment to revitalizing retro gems with quality-of-life enhancements. Though console editions remain unconfirmed, the care evident in this port underscores SNK’s dedication to preserving its arcade heritage while experimenting with modern features.
