John Romero Discusses Multifirm Talks to Finish Microsoft-Backed Game

While younger gamers may not instantly recognize John Romero, he remains a pivotal figure in shaping the FPS landscape as co-founder of id Software. His legacy includes groundbreaking titles such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake, which redefined interactive entertainment in the ’90s.

Today, Romero leads his own studio, Romero Games. Their latest release, the tactical strategy game Empire of Sin (2020), garnered mixed reviews. A subsequent partnership with Microsoft for an unannounced title fell through amid recent Xbox restructuring. However, Romero confirmed to Gamereactor during San Diego Comic Con Malaga that development continues, with multiple publishers now eyeing the project. The team retains full ownership of the IP and code, putting them in a strong negotiating position.

We’re exploring options for our major title. Since we control every aspect—IP, code, art—there’s significant interest. If you’ve invested years and, say, $50 million into development, partnering late still offers value. Others gain instant access to high-quality assets, accelerating their own timelines. Even if plans shift, that foundation lets us pivot efficiently. We’re roughly 50% through production, so there’s tangible progress to build upon.

With countless studios facing cancellations recently, fans will hope Romero secures a reliable partner soon. The industry could use fewer abandoned projects and more completed visions from icons like him.
