Here’s what Switch 2 cannot do without its day one update.

The imminent arrival of Switch 2 brings Nintendo’s critical day-one update, which is required to unlock core system features. Without it, many functionalities remain inaccessible straight from the box.

The 20.1.1 patch activates essential capabilities like running software, accessing online services, and using physical game cards. Delays in installation will restrict access to the eShop, multiplayer features, and external storage.

This update also enables compatibility with microSD Express cards and digital titles distributed via game-key cards, a common format for third-party releases. Users receive installation prompts during initial setup or when attempting restricted actions, requiring minimal downtime according to early reports.
