While Genki has recently faced legal challenges from Nintendo, the brand continues to launch accessories for the upcoming Switch successor. One standout item provides an unconventional method for storing both current and next-gen game cartridges.
Dubbed the “Mimic Chest”, this system comprises three red plastic containers matching standard Switch case dimensions. Each unit accommodates 12 titles, offering combined storage for 36 physical games – perfect for collectors with extensive libraries.
As someone who’s bought multiple storage solutions over the years, I recognize the appeal. However, several design choices raise questions. The lack of included artwork templates (promised but currently unavailable) leaves these cases visually mismatched when displayed alongside retail packaging. This creates an odd paradox – why consolidate cartridges if you’ll still need shelf space for bulky cases?
Practicality issues emerge upon closer inspection. Cartridges fit loosely within their slots, producing audible movement when transported. While minor, this design flaw becomes noticeable during use. The cases themselves feel less durable than competitors’ offerings; their flimsy construction contrasts with more robust alternatives like Hori’s 24-game holder, which remains my preferred portable option.
Ultimately, while the concept shows creativity, its execution falters. Requiring three separate cases to store 36 games negates purported space-saving benefits. For those prioritizing portability, established solutions continue to outperform this novel approach.
Available now through Genki’s storefront, the Mimic Chest retails for $19.99 / £17
