FTC Sending $126M Refunds for Unwanted Fortnite Purchases, Reopens Claims for Two Weeks

The Federal Trade Commission has disclosed plans to distribute reimbursements exceeding $126 million to Fortnite users impacted by unintended charges. A renewed claims window is now active, allowing affected players or guardians to seek additional compensation through July 9, 2025.

This initiative follows 629,344 reimbursements issued in late 2024 stemming from what regulators labeled “misleading” monetization tactics by Epic Games. While prior refunds averaged $114 per claimant, current figures remain undisclosed as submission opportunities continue. Payment distribution has commenced for 969,173 approved cases via PayPal or physical checks.

Recipients choosing paper checks must deposit them within three months, while digital payments through PayPal expire after 30 days. Combined with earlier disbursements, the FTC’s total restitution in this case now surpasses $200 million.

The compensation program originated in September 2023 as part of Epic Games’ $245 million settlement over controversial in-game purchase systems. An initial claims period closed in January 2024, but this extension provides an additional fortnight for eligible parties to file.
