First Glimpse of Hidden Path’s Canceled D&D Open-World RPG

Bellevue’s Hidden Path Entertainment, renowned for titles like Defense Grid and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, revealed plans in March 2021 for an ambitious open-world RPG rooted in Dungeons & Dragons lore. The studio began staffing critical positions—including Graphics Programmer, Lead Technical Artist, and Narrative Designer—to bring this AAA project to life. Fans anticipated a groundbreaking entry, as no prior D&D title had attempted a fully explorable, third-person RPG format.

Despite initial enthusiasm, the game failed to materialize. By early 2023, Wizards of the Coast terminated multiple licensed projects, including Hidden Path’s endeavor and a separate title by Otherside Entertainment. Hidden Path initially contested reports of cancellation, seeking alternative funding, but confirmed the closure in February 2024 alongside workforce reductions affecting 44 team members.

Though the RPG remains unplayable, glimpses surfaced through a former developer’s portfolio, shared by MP1st. The materials include mission gameplay footage and art assets, offering fans a fragment of what might have been. Preview the archived demo below:

Codenamed Project Dante, the game showcased third-person combat, stealth elements, and a party system with two AI companions—a hallmark of D&D adaptations. An Imgur gallery (embedded below) reveals early visual designs, from environments to character concepts.

While Project Dante remains shelved, upcoming Dungeons & Dragons titles like Dark Alliance Reboot and Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 4 continue to fuel anticipation among fans.
