FFVII Remake Developer Discusses Streamlined Progression, Player Choice in Content

The iconic RPG Final Fantasy VII Remake arrives on Xbox Series S/X and Nintendo Switch 2 starting January 22, 2026. These editions introduce Streamlined Progression—a system enabling players to focus on storytelling by automatically replenishing health/mana and amplifying damage output, minimizing gameplay challenges.

In a recent AUTOMATON Japan interview, Director Naoki Hamaguchi reiterated that the feature, patched into existing PS5 and PC versions, prioritizes player agency.

This coincided with the trilogy’s multiplatform expansion announcement. As someone who juggles multiple titles to stay informed, I often lack time to progress deeply. Having debug-like tools would help—it’s about offering options, even if some consider it controversial. Team debates occurred, but empowering user choice in modern entertainment is vital.

Hamaguchi clarified that future trilogy entries won’t launch with similar mechanics, emphasizing this addition suits a title now over five years old. Using Streamlined Progression could condense playthroughs to under 10 hours versus the usual 40-50-hour campaign.
