Fable Rumored to Be Missing 2026 Launch Window, Too

Xbox Studios recently confirmed that Fable’s 2025 release is no longer on track, as head Craig Duncan addressed audiences in February. Alongside this news, a Pre-Alpha showcase was shared to emphasize ongoing progress, stressing that development is focused on refining the experience rather than addressing core issues.

Insider Shpeshal Nick now suggests further delays might push Fable’s launch beyond 2026. During a recent XboxEra podcast, he cited unidentified sources indicating a possible 2027 arrival:

It’s unlikely we’ll see Fable next year. From what I’ve gathered through two channels, a 2027 timeline is more plausible. This isn’t a red flag about development troubles—just an adjustment for quality. Even if Playground denies it publicly, I’m hearing this from multiple angles. One contact isn’t tied to Microsoft directly, so there’s credibility here.

While Shpeshal Nick has a mixed history with leaks, his claims warrant cautious consideration. If accurate, Microsoft’s Xbox division could face heightened criticism following recent setbacks like the Perfect Dark reboot’s cancellation and ZeniMax’s shelved MMO. These issues, paired with workforce reductions, have already tested fan patience.

The delay would also complicate Xbox’s 25th-anniversary plans, which Phil Spencer previously hinted would feature legacy franchises like Fable, Forza, Gears of War, and possibly a Halo project. Delivering on these commitments is critical for maintaining brand trust, though prematurely launching an unfinished title risks equal backlash.

Playground Games’ eight-year development cycle for Fable—their first RPG after specializing in racing titles—raises questions about timelines, even with Eidos Montréal’s collaboration. Recent reports suggest Eidos may have concluded their involvement, leaving Playground to finalize remaining tasks independently.

Microsoft’s 2026 roster could still include titles like Clockwork Revolution, a new Forza installment, Gears of War: E-Day, and whispers of a Halo CE remake, supplemented by Bethesda and Activision Blizzard projects. But Fable’s absence would undoubtedly leave a gap in both schedule and community enthusiasm.

This story will be updated if Playground or Microsoft offers an official response.
