Electronic Arts (EA) has officially discontinued development on its Black Panther video game and closed the studio responsible for its creation, as reported by IGN. In an internal communication shared with the media, EA’s president, Laura Miele, explained that this decision was made to realign the company’s priorities and invest creative resources in high-potential projects.
Miele emphasized EA’s commitment to strengthening its core franchises, including titles like Battlefield, Skate, The Sims, and Apex Legends. In addition, the company is developing a new Iron Man game, the third entry in the Star Wars Jedi series from Respawn Entertainment, and a forthcoming Mass Effect project from BioWare.
Cliffhanger Games spearheaded the Black Panther project, announced in July 2023, under the leadership of Kevin Stephens, a seasoned executive previously at Monolith Productions, where he oversaw games like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War.
Miele described the decision as difficult, acknowledging the impact on individuals involved. She assured support, including transitions to other roles. Layoffs are occurring in EA’s mobile and central teams.
Cliffhanger Games had assembled a team featuring veterans from Gears of War and Halo, aiming for a third-person, single-player experience. This project will remain unrealized.
