At the Anime Expo in Los Angeles, studio TRIGGER and CD PROJEKT RED confirmed the production of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, marking a reversal from their prior 2022 stance. The sequel will feature 10 episodes as an independent arc within the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.
Bartosz Sztybor, the Hugo Award-winning showrunner and lead writer, shared:
While David Martinez’s journey concluded, Night City’s shadows conceal countless untold tales. Collaborating once more with TRIGGER allows us to craft a visceral narrative of betrayal and rebirth — a departure from our earlier work.
Joining Sztybor are character designer Kanno Ichigo (known for Promare and the original Edgerunners) and screenwriter Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann). The series will stream exclusively on Netflix, though no release window was provided.
The initial Cyberpunk: Edgerunners debuted in 2022 to widespread acclaim, achieving a flawless Rotten Tomatoes score. Its success coincided with CDPR’s 1.6 update for Cyberpunk 2077, introducing cosmetic customization, cross-save functionality, new missions, weapons, and minor anime-inspired elements. This synergy revitalized player engagement with the RPG during its resurgence period.
While CD PROJEKT RED hasn’t confirmed additional game content tied to the new series, development resources currently prioritize their upcoming Witcher title over Night City expansions.
