Civilization 7 is not doing well on Steam. Classic maps and major adjustments seek to change this.

Arriving in February, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII failed to meet expectations. Firaxis has been working to improve the experience through ongoing updates.

Recent patch 1.2.1 introduces multiple enhancements. This update features enhanced AI behavior and game balance adjustments, along with a novel Pangea Plus map variant. Multiplayer sessions now support more participants.

The Pangea format, a returning favorite from earlier series entries, centers around a massive landmass ideal for conflict-oriented strategies.

Major June update announced

Developers outlined upcoming improvements scheduled for summer deployment. The June patch will introduce:

  1. Introducing extensive map support;
  2. Complete Steam Workshop compatibility;
  3. Expanded customization settings;
  4. Additional religious elements, city-state advantages, and specialized urban development paths;
  5. Ongoing balance refinements and UI upgrades.

Since its February 11th launch across multiple platforms, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII has struggled with user approval. Current Steam ratings stand at 48% overall, with only 38% of recent reviews expressing satisfaction. This reflects growing impatience with update cadence.

Legacy titles outperform new release

Player engagement metrics underscore these challenges. The seventh installment recently peaked at 8,717 concurrent Steam users, compared to Civilization VI’s 36,174 and Civilization V’s 16,229 simultaneous players. The downward trend places the latest entry behind its predecessors in current popularity rankings.
