Borderlands 4 Is Out Now on PC, and it’s already the Biggest Borderlands Game on Steam, Ever

Circana’s senior analyst Mat Piscatella revealed U.S. video game sales data for September 2025, showcasing a lineup dominated by sports franchises and action titles. Borderlands 4 seized the #1 monthly spot, while Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei debuted at #4 amidst established annual sports releases.

Piscatella’s monthly breakdown highlights both September’s top sellers and year-to-date rankings. Claiming the top position for September 2025 pushed Borderlands 4 to third place in annual charts, trailing Monster Hunter Wilds at #2 and NBA 2K26 maintaining its yearly leadership.

Sports simulations dominated September’s rankings, with NBA 2K26 securing the #2 monthly position. EA Sports FC 26 followed closely at #3, while Madden NFL 26 completed the top-tier rankings. Ghost of Yotei’s #4 achievement proved notable given its October 2 release date, with sales data reflecting pre-order momentum.

Analysts highlighted that Ghost of Yotei’s “flat” performance relative to its predecessor requires contextual understanding. While Ghost of Tsushima launched in 2020 during peak pandemic-driven gaming engagement, its sequel debuted under normalized market conditions with a smaller active console install base. Piscatella emphasized this contrast via social commentary.

Despite its 18th-place standing in yearly sales, Ghost of Yotei demonstrates impressive traction as a PlayStation-exclusive launch. Hardware trends saw Nintendo Switch 2 maintaining its monthly sales crown, while PS5 surpassed PlayStation 3’s lifetime U.S. sales figures during September.

Industry-wide, September 2025 delivered 10% year-over-year growth across hardware, software, and accessories. Analysts anticipate October’s charts will reflect Ghost of Yotei’s full-month availability and Battlefield 6’s impact.
