The Xbox edition of Black Myth: Wukong, eagerly awaited by players, has been given a confirmed launch date.
Developers at Game Science have announced that the Xbox Series X/S iteration will become available on August 20th, with pre-order access opening June 18th. Additionally, discounts for PlayStation and PC versions will go live in June.
This timing aligns with the game’s original debut on PC and PlayStation platforms twelve months prior, supporting earlier speculation about console exclusivity arrangements affecting Xbox availability.
Prior to last year’s launch, developers had confirmed the title would skip Xbox initially.
Months of conjecture followed, with some attributing the delay to technical constraints. The studio maintained they were refining performance benchmarks.
However, industry sources indicated a platform exclusivity agreement might explain the staggered rollout.
Microsoft previously clarified technical specifications weren’t the barrier, with a spokesperson declining to discuss third-party partnerships.
Earlier this year, Game Science’s leadership commented via social media: “But that 10G shared memory, I can’t really get it without a few years of optimisation experience.”
Alternative theories note the studio’s tradition of August 20th reveals coinciding with cultural celebrations of Sun Wukong’s mythological origins.
Regarding development challenges, studio representatives stated: “Bringing Black Myth: Wukong to Xbox Series X/S – and ensuring the experience met our internal quality standards – was no easy feat. Fortunately, we were able to complete this challenging task smoothly within the first year of the game’s official release.”
Since its 2023 debut, the title has achieved remarkable commercial success, moving 10 million units in its launch window. Regarded as China’s breakthrough AAA production, it’s influenced a strategic shift toward premium gaming experiences within the region.
This success continues inspiring domestic developers, evident in upcoming projects like Tides of Annihilation, Phantom Blade Zero, and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.
