Battlefield 6 Ditched Ray Tracing to Focus on Performance

Players diving into Battlefield 6’s recent open beta quickly noticed missing ray-tracing settings, a detail compounded by developer silence on the feature. Comicbook.com sought clarity from Ripple Effect’s Studio Technical Director, Christian Buhl, who confirmed no plans for ray tracing at launch or post-release. Prioritizing optimization over advanced lighting, the team aimed to ensure fluid performance across all platforms.

Ray tracing won’t be included upon release, nor is it in development for upcoming updates. Early in production, we chose to allocate resources toward maximizing stability and accessibility. By avoiding complex graphical features, we concentrated on delivering a seamless experience for the majority of players, rather than catering to niche hardware capabilities.

This omission contrasts with earlier franchise entries: 2018’s Battlefield V introduced ray-traced reflections, and 2042 later incorporated ambient occlusion. Yet, Buhl emphasized competitive multiplayer demands stable frame rates above visual enhancements—a stance seemingly validated by the beta’s record-breaking participation. To boost performance, NVIDIA GPU owners can utilize DLSS Super Resolution and Frame Generation, while AMD and Intel users benefit from FSR 3 and XeSS technologies respectively.

The title arrives on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S globally on October 10.
