Baldur’s Gate 3 Mod Adds Game Master-Inspired Versus Mode

Though Baldur’s Gate 3 surpasses Larian’s Divinity: Original Sin 2 in most aspects, it notably lacks the latter’s Game Master functionality. The earlier title enabled users to simulate tabletop RPG experiences by designing custom campaigns, putting adventurers at the mercy of a player-driven storyteller—a feature many hoped would return in this official D&D adaptation. However, studio head Swen Vincke clarified that implementing such a system would have significantly delayed Baldur’s Gate 3’s already expansive development cycle.

While native GM tools remain absent, recent modding advancements have sparked new possibilities. Community developer 786r786 recently released a Versus Mode modification, available via Nexus Mods and mod.io, enabling multiplayer hosts to command enemy units during combat encounters. The mod transfers control of hostile NPCs to the session creator whenever battles commence, though it requires specific activation steps:

At the onset of an enemy’s action phase, hosting players must click highlighted adversary portraits to assume direct command. This allows strategic PvP scenarios where one participant orchestrates opposition forces against fellow players.

Optimal functionality requires multiplayer sessions with two or more participants. Hosts should initially observe gameplay until combat triggers, after which they can manipulate hostile entities during their respective turns.

While this groundwork doesn’t replicate Divinity’s full creative toolkit, it establishes a framework for potential expansions. Enthusiasts anticipate further modifications might bridge the gap between Baldur’s Gate 3’s structured narrative and Original Sin 2’s open-ended customization.
