Audiences reacted strongly to the final episode of the second season of The Last of Us, even from those who were initially enthusiastic about the HBO adaptation. The show has diverged significantly in terms of specific scenes and character tone, despite aligning closely with the Naughty Dog game’s narrative.
Episode seven of season two follows Ellie’s pursuit of Abby, taking her to the aquarium and leading to a confrontation with Joel’s murderer at the theater. The episode ends with Abby firing her weapon, and a teaser for season three shows Abby waking up at the stadium on the same day Ellie first arrives in Seattle.
Among these events, the TV series introduces a brand new scene that stands out as one of the strangest in the entire show.
While traveling to the aquarium, Ellie encounters two WLF soldiers accompanying their leader Isaac on boats heading toward the Seraphite island, as seen when playing as Abby in the game. In the series, Ellie steals a boat left behind after a storm and is nearly lost in a massive tidal wave.
She washes up on the Seraphite island and is captured by the group. Just as Ellie is about to be executed, an alarm signals an invasion, causing the Seraphites to release her. Despite earlier season two scenes depicting torture, they let her go. Ellie then manages to get back into the boat during the storm and reaches the aquarium.
