Recently, MinnMax released a fast-paced discussion with Hideki Kamiya, the director of the highly anticipated Okami sequel, who is also renowned for classic games like Bayonetta, Viewtiful Joe, and the original Resident Evil 2. After departing Capcom in 2006 to co-found PlatinumGames, Kamiya surprised fans by rejoining the company to helm the new Okami project. The full interview delves into many of Kamiya’s iconic titles and includes personal insights, such as his thoughts on YouTube content creators.
Kamiya discusses the Okami sequel in a recent interview
Okami, originally launched in 2006, has been re-released in HD across modern platforms. Its sequel, revealed at last year’s Game Awards, surprised fans given the nearly two-decade wait and Kamiya’s prior success at PlatinumGames. During the interview, Kamiya expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to develop the sequel, though he remains relaxed about timelines. No release date has been set, so patience is expected from fans.
When asked about sticking to his original vision for the sequel, Kamiya acknowledged that while he had initial ideas, much has been forgotten over the years. He plans to blend past concepts with new ideas. Interestingly, Kamiya has not yet handled the Nintendo Switch 2 but is intrigued by the Joy-Con’s mouse functionality, which could offer innovative gameplay possibilities, especially for Okami‘s brush mechanic.
Kamiya also suggested that Okami might be the best fit among his works for a film adaptation. As a fan of the original, I look forward to seeing how this sequel evolves.
