Nintendo Switch 2 Q&A: HDR and HD Rumble Show Big Improvements

The Nintendo Switch 2 launch includes mostly existing games adapted for the console, with few new titles; FAST FUSION is one such exception. The anti-gravity racing series, developed by Munich-based Shin’en Multimedia, has long been a staple of Nintendo consoles. The first game, FAST RACING LEAGUE, launched on the Wii in May 2011. Its sequel, FAST RACING NEO, arrived on the Wii U in 2015, followed by an enhanced version called FAST RMX as a launch title for the Switch in March 2017.

FAST FUSION is also a launch title for the Switch 2, marking the return of the series with fresh features like Hyperjumps and Vehicle Fusion. As with previous entries, it serves as a technical showcase, boasting 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, and HDR support. Jack Merluzzi, the renowned F-Zero GX announcer, returns to lend his voice to the game, as he did for FAST RACING NEO.

We reached out to Shin’en Multimedia to learn more about their new game and their experience developing for the Nintendo Switch 2.

When did development on your Nintendo Switch 2 title begin?

Work on the game started in 2024.

That’s a short timeline. Did you complete FAST FUSION in just one year, or was it in development earlier?

The project wasn’t in development before 2024. However, our prior experience with the FAST series and our custom tools and engine allowed us to streamline development significantly.

After working with the new hardware, what stands out as the most impressive feature, and why?

From a developer’s perspective, the enhanced GPU capabilities are particularly impressive. The HDR support has greatly improved the visual appeal of our game.

What do you think about the Joy-Con 2’s improvements? How are you utilizing the new HD Rumble?

The HD Rumble is a notable upgrade. We’ve incorporated it throughout FAST FUSION to enhance the gameplay experience.

What sets FAST FUSION apart from its predecessor?

In addition to more detailed, vibrant tracks, FAST FUSION introducesVehicle Fusion and Hyperjumps, which elevate the gameplay to a new level.

Can you explain how Vehicle Fusion works?

Any vehicles you unlock in the game can be used for fusion by simply playing the game (no microtransactions required). By combining two vehicles, you create a hybrid that combines the best traits of both. For example, fusing a fast but slow-accelerating vehicle with a slower but quick-accelerating one results in a balanced new vehicle. The design also merges to create a unique appearance.

That sounds exciting. Thanks for your insights!

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch globally on June 5, 2025. Nintendo has opted not to provide pre-release review units or codes to the press, but we look forward to sharing our thoughts on the new hardware and some launch games later in June.
