Despite challenges, WoW and Helldivers 2 veterans are developing a game beyond players.

The current state of the game development industry is challenging, as anyone keeping up with the latest news can attest. Reports of significant layoffs and studio closures are frequent in the industry, highlighting the tough times.

Craig Morrison, along with Colin Cragg and other seasoned professionals from studios like EA DICE and Arrowhead, shared their insights with GamesRadar+. They described the market conditions as “terrifying” for establishing a new studio.

Colin Cragg emphasized how unprecedented the current situation is. He noted that despite hopes for a pro-business environment in the U.S. early this year, the industry remains stifled. The uncertainty and risks have left everyone cautious.

Despite these challenges, Colin Cragg and Craig Morrison launched Blue Scarab Entertainment last year. Cragg, now CEO, explained their decision: “We saw an opportunity to create something unique and inclusive, addressing diverse demographics overlooked by the mainstream market.

Our goal is to demonstrate that quality experiences can cater to a broader audience beyond traditional gamers, opening new pathways for both players and investors.

Based in Stockholm, Blue Scarab is developing Equinox: Homecoming, an MMORPG on Unreal Engine 5. Currently in Steam Early Access with 350 reviews, 78% of which are positive, the game transports players to the fictional island of Alderwood. The narrative revolves around solving a mysterious murder alongside various characters, with horses playing a key role in exploring the vast landscape.
