Major publishers fear generative AI could harm their reputation. Consumers aren’t interested.

Many gamers have conflicting opinions about generative AI, particularly in gaming contexts. This has been evident in recent events like Darth Vader’s appearance in Fortnite or the release of the Veo 3 model, which creates realistic gameplay visuals. Notably, major gaming companies are starting to recognize players’ hesitations.

AI’s Impact on Reputation

Jason Schreier reported on Bloomberg that Take-Two Interactive recently filed its annual 10-K form, highlighting potential risks for investors. While most entries are standard, such as industry competition, this year included expanded discussion on AI.

The integration of AI into our products may pose operational and reputational risks.

The document elaborated that while AI significantly influences game development and dev work, its use can lead to social and ethical issues, resulting in legal and reputational risks. Take-Two emphasized that players’ negative perceptions of AI could harm company reputations and financial outcomes.

It’s noteworthy that Take-Two isn’t alone in addressing this concern. Electronic Arts also included a similar warning in its K-10 form.

We are incorporating AI tools into our processes. If not managed properly, the use of AI might lead to social and ethical issues, damaging consumer confidence and financial performance.

Players Prefer Human-Created Games

Both Take-Two and EA are observing growing player resistance to generative AI in games. Since the gaming industry aims to satisfy player preferences, studios must adapt.

Schreier noted that players value experiences crafted by humans, including storylines, mechanics, and level designs. Even minor AI-generated elements, like backgrounds, can lead to negative reactions.

AI’s situation has been likened to NFTs, which are largely disliked by players. Unlike NFTs, AI could streamline game development, but it’s still rejected by many players.

It’s no surprise that Take-Two and EA are concerned. If players discovered AI-generated elements in GTA 6, the backlash could severely harm the company’s reputation.
