Clair Obscur Director Praises Persona 5’s Visual Design as Top-tier

It’s well-known that Guillaume Broche, the creative director of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is a big fan of Japanese RPGs — but as CEO of Sandfall Interactive, he has recently highlighted one particular title in a new interview.

“Persona 5 stands out as the best game in the world when it comes to UI and combat visuals,” Broche said in an interview with Japanese publication Denfaminicogamer (via Automaton).

He added: “The way the camera shifts dramatically with each action from the player, creating a movie-like feel, left a strong impression on me.”

And it’s hard to disagree. Atlus has consistently produced visually stunning titles over the last two decades, with Persona 5 often regarded as a standout in terms of design. While recent games like Persona 3 Reload and Metaphor: ReFantazio have also made significant contributions to the medium, Persona 5 remains a favorite.

If you’ve played Clair Obscur, you’ll likely notice the inspiration — especially in how the combat camera shifts depending on your selected actions. However, Broche emphasized that he doesn’t simply borrow ideas from other games.

“In the West, some games copy aspects of popular titles on a surface level to replicate their success. But this approach often results in inferior copies — and that was the kind of game I wanted to avoid making,” he explained.
