Update for “Helldivers 2: Heart of Democracy” reveals Super Earth is directly under attack.

Helldivers 2 has introduced a major update titled Heart of Democracy, shifting the battlefield to the streets of Super Earth. Previously, the game’s conflicts with alien foes took place on distant planets. However, the invasion by the squid-like Illuminate has now reached Earth, with battles occurring in densely populated cities and towering skyscrapers.

Players must now work alongside SEAF troops to activate Planetary Defense Cannons while simultaneously protecting civilians. Friendly fire will result in penalties, adding a new layer of challenge to the gameplay.

A message on the Helldivers 2 Discord reads, “The nightmare of those defending Managed Democracy has materialized. Despite the efforts of our Helldivers, the Illuminate have reached Super Earth, terrorizing citizens and destroying infrastructure. It’s time to fight for Democracy and reclaim our planet.”

Last week’s update previewed this invasion, introducing new enemies like the Crescent Overseer and Fleshmob. The update also introduced a weapon customization system, allowing players to unlock new attachments as their weapons level up.

According to a PlayStation Blog post, “You’ve learned the tactics of these new squid enemies, but now you must master your tools to fight on Super Earth. Use every resource and decimate their forces!” The update has also seen player numbers on Steam rise to their highest since December 2024, when the Omens of Tyranny update was released.

In January, Helldivers 2’s creative director, Johan Pilestedt, announced he would take a sabbatical to work on Arrowhead’s next project. At the Game Developer Conference, he criticized industry layoffs, calling them “unnecessarily brutal” in the pursuit of battle royale games.
