Sony Launches More Affordable Japan-Exclusive Japanese-Language Digital PS5

Following Nintendo’s regional strategy, Sony has unveiled a PS5 Digital Edition exclusively for Japan, mirroring the Switch 2’s language-specific release. This model locks system settings and store access to Japanese, offering a lower price point compared to the standard version. While the announcement closed Sony’s State of Play Japan stream—a event focused on local audiences—the move strategically targets remaining PS5 holdouts in the region with a cost-effective entry.

Priced at ¥55,000 ($355), the new edition undercuts Japan’s current digital PS5 cost of ¥72,980 ($475). Though higher than the console’s 2020 launch price of ¥39,980 ($260), this revised figure positions the hardware between pre-increase rates and today’s adjusted value. Globally, this makes Japan’s PS5 pricing among the most competitive, offering savings over international markets where the console remains pricier.

Speculation arises whether Sony will extend this regional pricing model to the anticipated PS5 Pro, potentially broadening its appeal in key markets.
