New Age of Empires Titles Appear to Use Unreal Engine 5

A recent job advertisement indicates World’s Edge is working on a new title within the Age of Empires universe. This aligns with the franchise’s revival since 2018, as older entries like Age of Mythology: Retold and multiple Definitive Editions have seen consistent updates. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, in particular, remains actively supported with fresh downloadable content.

A notable detail from the listing is the studio’s adoption of Unreal Engine 5. While the project’s scope remains unclear, it likely marks an original entry rather than another remaster, given recent releases. The recruitment call emphasizes expertise in Unreal Engine development and collaboration with external teams.

“Our team at Xbox Game Studios is dedicated to advancing the Age of Empires legacy, a cornerstone of RTS gaming. We seek a Principal Unreal Engineer to shape our technical infrastructure and guide external partners in creating groundbreaking experiences for this iconic series.”

Further clues emerge from social media, where a World’s Edge engineer’s profile mentions supporting multiple unannounced UE5 projects. This developer has contributed to the studio since late 2023.

Speculation points to Age of Empires V as a prime candidate. Despite Relic Entertainment’s successful launch of Age of Empires IV in 2021—soon expanding with November’s Dynasties of the East DLC and a PlayStation 5 port—World’s Edge may collaborate with external studios again. Notably, Relic became an independent entity earlier this year after separating from SEGA.

Given World’s Edge’s limited internal capacity, future projects may depend on collaborating with external developers. Questions remain about whether Relic will rejoin the franchise post-independence or if new partners will emerge for this UE5-powered endeavor.
