Ex-CAPCOM Designer Claims Palworld Overstepped Boundaries

After Pocketpair confirmed plans to release Palworld’s 1.0 update in 2026, Yoshiki Okamoto—a seasoned developer known for CAPCOM titles such as Street Fighter and Resident Evil—voiced strong criticism in a YouTube video. He argued that the game overstepped creative boundaries and should not be normalized despite its popularity.

In my view, Palworld breached ethical limits, and allowing such actions sets a dangerous precedent. Whether a title succeeds commercially or earns praise shouldn’t justify it. If Nintendo settles legally, the game might gain legitimacy. Until then, purchasing it supports questionable practices. I urge players to avoid it.

Reactions to Okamoto’s stance were polarized. Critics noted similarities between his past projects and earlier games, suggesting hypocrisy.

Nintendo initiated a patent lawsuit against Pocketpair in late 2024. Recent court filings revealed the company’s argument that mods don’t qualify as prior art. This led to gameplay revisions, including the removal of capture mechanics involving spherical tools.

Notably, Pocketpair unveiled Palworld: Palfarm, a farming-focused spin-off, shortly after Nintendo announced Pokémon Pokopia, a life-sim title developed with Koei Tecmo for Switch 2, targeting a 2026 launch.
