Sony’s inaugural PlayStation console debuted in North America three decades ago on September 9, 1995, marking its 30th anniversary on this date in 2025. To celebrate, PlayStation has launched a ‘Memories’ initiative, but a revealing statistic emerged from Circana’s executive director Mat Piscatella. According to Circana’s sales tracking, nearly 50% of PlayStation’s all-time top-selling titles in the U.S. are entries from the Call of Duty franchise.
Piscatella shared a sales breakdown commemorating the milestone, showcasing the top 20 PlayStation games in the U.S. since 1995, ranked by revenue and units sold as of July 2025. The data underscores Call of Duty’s dominance: 11 of the top 20 revenue-generating titles belong to the series, while nine COD games appear in the units-sold ranking.
First-party PlayStation Studios titles have limited representation. On the revenue chart, only Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man trilogy (2018-2023) appears. The units-sold list adds Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us and Santa Monica Studio’s God of War (2018) alongside Insomniac’s titles.
Notably, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock claims the #10 revenue spot, likely boosted by peripheral bundles. Grand Theft Auto V leads both charts, with Red Dead Redemption 2, Minecraft, and multiple Call of Duty titles rounding out the top ranks. Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare II (2022), and Black Ops 6 dominate the premium pricing tier.
These rankings highlight Call of Duty’s sustained commercial supremacy on PlayStation platforms. Despite critical acclaim for franchises like God of War and The Last of Us, their sales impact pales compared to Activision’s military shooter series, which continues to drive PlayStation’s software performance annually.
