Sony Reports PlayStation Plus Engagement at Peak, Still Excludes First-Party Titles on Launch Day

PlayStation Plus marks its 15th anniversary on June 29, 2025, following its initial debut in 2010. Alongside revealing July 2025’s PS Plus Essential lineup, Sony has unveiled commemorative plans for the service’s milestone.

Nick Maguire, SIE’s global services VP, discussed the platform’s evolution in a recent Game File interview. Echoing SIE CEO Hideaki Nishino’s remarks, Maguire confirmed rising engagement on PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers since the 2022 service overhaul. “Current Plus participation is at an all-time peak,” he noted, attributing growth to restructuring efforts.

The tiered model’s success has “exceeded projections,” Maguire added. “It’s opened new avenues for developers to connect with players while boosting membership retention through monthly Catalog updates.

While sidestepping critiques of recent subscription cost hikes, Maguire emphasized Sony’s focus on “enhancing Plus’ value proposition through strategic investments.” Nishino previously framed pricing adjustments as necessary for service improvements, a stance supported by sustained user adoption of premium tiers.

Regarding first-party releases, Maguire reiterated PlayStation’s policy against day-one launches for studio titles on Plus. The company instead prioritizes third-party collaborations for immediate Catalog access, citing titles like FBC: Firebreak as model partnerships. “Our balance of 4-5 yearly indie debuts with legacy titles works effectively,” he stated, while leaving room for potential expansions.

When questioned about multiplayer titles potentially benefiting from Plus integration, Maguire acknowledged the service’s role in audience expansion: “Plus serves as a powerful discovery tool, helping games find fresh audiences at optimal moments in their lifecycle.

The executive addressed Catalog rotations without directly referencing recent removals like the Resistance series. “With 80+ game collections available, regular updates keep the Catalog dynamic and discovery-focused,” he explained, comparing the approach to streaming platforms’ content strategies.

Maguire confirmed team awareness of user feedback regarding content changes: “We monitor community input to refine future decisions,” he said, while expressing confidence in PS Plus’ evolving offerings. “There’s pride in our contributions to gaming ecosystems and excitement for continued player engagement.
