The next chapter in The Witcher series could realize fan desires by introducing creatures absent in prior games.
Manticore Mythology Revisited
Readers of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels may recall references to manticores – hybrid beasts blending leonine physiques with humanoid features and venomous appendages, as described in works like “Time of Contempt.”
Across three mainline games and the Thronebreaker spinoff, these creatures never materialized despite textual references in NPC dialogues and collectible armor sets. A 2015 development leak revealed abandoned plans for their inclusion in The Witcher 3, fueling ongoing speculation within the community (via Reddit discussions).
Geographical Clues Emerge
CD Projekt Red’s Unreal Engine showcase reignited excitement through conceptual creature designs. Early prototype footage briefly featured a manticore variant alongside Ciri’s voice referencing the monster. Dedicated fans identified the prototype as an imperial subspecies reportedly inhabiting border regions between Cintra and Sodden near the Armush Mountains.
The presentation also revealed environment tests set in Kovir’s terrain. While these elements remain unconfirmed for the final product, their inclusion suggests serious consideration during development.
Tempering expectations, the studio emphasizes these remain experimental concepts rather than gameplay promises. However, the resources invested in their creation hint at possible narrative directions for the franchise’s future.
